NOF Tip for 11 May – Osteoporosis by the Numbers

May 11, 2020 Leave your thoughts

The numbers are scary if anyone actually pays attention.  Every year about 75,000 Americans die of complications of a hip fracture.  Another 75,000 wind up in a nursing home for the rest of their life.  Most of the remaining 150,000 need a walker or cane to walk across a room.  And this goes on year after year.

We spend over $50Billion every year treating patients for 2 million fractures due to osteoporosis.  We only test or treat about 1/5th of the patients with fractures.

50% of second fractures could have been prevented with treatment, sometimes simply correcting diet and lifestyle.
